Delrey Awarded Heart Avengers Grant for AED

BALTIMORE (May 2, 2013) — Local school program, Delrey School, in Lansdowne, Md. was recently awarded a Heart Avengers grant from Parent Heart Watch and Heartsine Technologies in which they received one HeartSine Samaritan PAD 300P Defibrillator and CPR and AED training for 5 staff members. Heart Avengers, is an AED grant program designed to provide private schools in the United States the opportunity to receive an automated external defibrillator (AED) for their school. An AED is a medical device designed to quickly analyze the heart’s rhythm and safely deliver an electric shock in the event of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

Delrey is only 1 of 20 schools in the nation to receive this grant by submitting a video that explained the need for an AED at the school and demonstrate how they would spread the word about the grant and heart conditions. The creative video included staff and children from the school and can be viewed on YouTubeExternal Links icon.

SCA is the leading cause of death on school property, which includes not only children, but also teachers, administrators, parents and visitors. The first person on the scene of a cardiac arrest is in the best position of saving a life, if the rescuer is equipped with an AED. The students at Delrey were very excited to have the opportunity to learn how they too can be effective in saving someone else’s life.

Delrey School serves children ages 2 to 21 throughout central Maryland and provides comprehensive services to children with multiple disabilities, combining a rigorous academic curriculum with the latest therapeutic techniques and communication strategies to help students better engage in learning.

Part of the grant award stipulated that the school have a means to spread the word about the importance of AEDs in public areas and that’s exactly what the students and staff plan to do this Saturday at their 10th Annual Mayfair. The Mayfair serves as a fundraiser for the school which includes homemade crafts, a bake sale, a flower sale, food and refreshments, activities for the kids including pony rides, a moon bounce, and carnival games, live music and raffles galore.

The Mayfair is this Saturday, May 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Arbutus Volunteer Fire Department on 5200 Southwestern Boulevard, Halethorpe, Md.

Unified Community Connections (UC2)External Links icon, formerly United Cerebral Palsy of Central Maryland, operates Delrey School, which opened in 1964. UC2 is a large, dynamic non-profit organization providing thousands of hours of services and support each year to both children and adults with a wide variety of disabilities and chronic health issues in Maryland.
